Application of High-Precision X-ray Fluorescence Elemental Analyzer for Elemental Analysis in Soil Remediation Plants

This application note presents a solution for the rapid and quantitative analysis of elements such as cadmium (Cd), iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), arsenic (As), and lead (Pb) in the soil remediation plant—Sedum plumbizincicola.

Application Overview

Heavy metal emissions and their dispersion into soil systems have led to growing environmental concerns. Statistics indicate that China currently has approximately 10 million hectares of land contaminated by heavy metals, with direct annual crop losses exceeding 20 billion RMB attributable to such pollution. Soil heavy metals accumulate in organisms via the food chain, posing substantial risks to food safety and human health.

Phytoremediation leverages the absorption, transformation, and storage capabilities of plants and associated soil microorganisms to reduce pollutant concentrations or toxicity in the environment, thereby achieving effective soil remediation. Sedum plumbizincicola has been demonstrated to efficiently absorb elements including cadmium (Cd), iron (Fe), and zinc (Zn) from soil. The high-precision X-ray fluorescence elemental analyzer enables reliable quantification of elements such as Cd, Fe, Zn, As, and Pb in plant samples, covering a detection range from parts per million (ppm) to percentage levels.

Technical Principles

The High-Precision X-ray Fluorescence Elemental Analyzer (HPXRF) utilizes Monochromatic Focusing Doubly Curved Crystal (DCC) optics, which monochromatize polychromatic X-rays from the source and effectively focus them onto the sample. This greatly enhances the instrument's signal-to-noise ratio. Upon monochromatization, elements in the sample emit characteristic X-ray fluorescence signals. These signals are collected and processed by a high-resolution Silicon Drift Detector (SDD), and the software's Fundamental Parameter (FP) algorithm calculates the elemental content in the sample.
